Sarah Stokes, User Researcher
User researcher | Public sector | Tech for good | Digital
What’s your background?
I studied psychology, specialising in motivations of young children and counselling and psychotherapy. Through that time there was an INTENSE amount of statistical and qualitative research and data analysis, and in my spare time I trained Nightline volunteers (like Samaritans but run FOR students BY students), and also interned on web research projects for the university. After leaving, I briefly worked as a Data Quality Analyst for the Department of Education, before landing my first EVER permanent role at HMRC as a User Researcher. I worked at HMRC most notably on the Tax Credits project before a short spell at another agency, before landing at Difrent.
Describe your role at Difrent
I’m a User Researcher, currently working as Lead User Researcher on behalf of one of our clients – NHS BSA, on the NHS Jobs project.
Who are you outside of Difrent?
Well…. I hold multiple roles in Scouting, from running weekly meetings with young people, to giving the young adults leadership training, helping run the Media Team and our web refresh, lighting team for our annual variety show, and planning the entertainment for a large camp of around 5,000 people in 2020. I’m also learning British Sign Language Level 1, taking my advanced drivers test so I can drive the car for Northumbria Blood Bikes in bad weather. I’m a runner, training for a marathon in December (www.justgiving.com/teams/SRStokes). MOST importantly, I am the BIGGEST country music fan you will ever meet.
Who would you invite to dinner, dead or alive?
Pffft there are so many people! There are so many inspirational women I’d love like Katherine Johnson, Rosa Parks, Tarana Burke, Flight Lieutenant Kirsty Stewart, but honestly I’d love to just get all my friends and family (they’re scattered all over the country and North America) round a campfire to cook food and drink some moonshine.
